Overview

Introduction

The Department of Nuclear Engineering (NE) was established in the year 1977 to meet the current and future needs of Saudi Arabia in the fields of nuclear power, radiation safety, and radioisotope applications in medicine and industry.

 

In the year 2007, the Nuclear Engineering Department introduced two new programs in addition to the Nuclear Engineering Program: the Nuclear Engineering (Medical Physics) Program and Nuclear Engineering (Radiation Protection) Program. The new programs broadened the curriculum to include radiological engineering topics. They further expanded the appeal of the department, as the undergraduate enrollment trend in the department showed consistent yearly increase. In the past two years, the trend of renewed interest in nuclear education among students was clearly evident and attributed to the leadership, encouragement, and support of the KAU University, Faculty of Engineering, and the NE department.

The Mission of the Department

To prepare highly qualified nuclear, medical physics, and radiation protection engineers who are capable of serving the community at a level that meets international standards and the demands of the century.

 

Programs Offered

The department offers Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) degrees in Nuclear Engineering. The B.Sc. degrees are offered in three programs: (1) Nuclear Engineering, (2) Nuclear Engineering (Medical Physics), and (3) Nuclear Engineering (Radiation Protection).  The B.Sc. program in Nuclear Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, http://www.abet.org. In addition, the M.Sc. programs in Engineering Medical Physics and in Engineering Radiation Protection are soon to be offered by the department.

 

Career Opportunities

The graduates of the Nuclear Engineering Program are generally employed in the government sectors (i.e. the health and regulatory ), and various industries that require knowledge in radiation analysis, material and equipment quality control, gauging, non-destructive testing, and radiation safety. Health facilities (public and private) employ mainly nuclear engineers with specialization in Nuclear Engineering (Medical Physics) and Nuclear Engineering (Radiation Protection) who have knowledge in the fields of radiation diagnostics, radiation therapy, imaging, radiation quality control and radiation protection. Other opportunities in the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Aviation, and Ministry of Defense may also be available for our graduates.
